but damn, it’s been more than a month! Time flies when you get a job, I guess. That’s where I’ve been, and what a (seemingly) long, strange trip it’s been, really. My first non-art job in, oh, fifteen years. So it’s been rather up and down emotionally, I must say. Up ’cause I can pay my rent; down because, well, I couldn’t find a job in my field. Talk about feeling rejected every time I think about it. I mean, the 7% black city I live in is opening a Museum of the African Diaspora and I can’t get a dang job??? (alright; I did do some freelance work for them a couple years ago, but that ain’t a career.) My advice to any aspiring young things out there—don’t go independent. Get the PhD, or whatever the degree du jour is. I wouldn’t have done it any other way, but it’s too, too hard, at least in this field. I give. Uncle.

Overall, though, I’m hanging in there, and finally seeing my way clear to, I dunno, maybe doing my own work for a change. That was the lesson of freelancing—yeah, you set your own schedule but you’re always hustling to find work so the last thing you have time for is your own thing. So many life lessons this year, so much happened on every level, personally and globally. When I’m commuting an hour each day or sitting overdressed at the office I wonder, did I really spend 3 months in Taos earlier this year, as a writer? How long ago that seems. A lifetime ago.

  • CARLAGIRL PHOTO was founded on 14 February 1999 by Carla Willliams, a photographer, writer, and editor, born, raised and heading back to (yea!) Los Angeles, California.

It was established with two goals: to be able to make my own work widely available for free, and to make accessible my research about artists of the African Diaspora, especially photographers, and in particular women. As it developed it grew to also include GLBTQ artists.

Site visitors will probably notice that I haven’t updated here frequently. I am taking a break from my site(s) for at least the summer. I’ve been working in this field for 25 years and I’m burned out on photography and art, the site(s) are in need of major updates/ revamping/ retooling, social media is exhausting, [...] […]

    • Mambu Badu’s Inaugural Magazine February 8, 2012
Danielle was briefly a contributor to this site; I am very excited to hear about her latest venture, the collective and now journal Mambu Badu “that seek to find, expose, and nurture emerging female photographers of African descent.”  Congrats, Danielle! As you may (or may not) know, last fall, I co-founded Mambu Badu, a photography collective […]
