what gives you hope?

Posted on | December 21, 2005 | 6 Comments

Last night we were asking the usual year-end questions—what brings you joy? What gives you hope?—and I had no answer for the latter question (truthfully, I think I just fell asleep before I could answer). Now in the bored light of day, I wonder: Is it indictments handed down to Republicans? The mainstream exposure of Bush administration illegalities? Protestors in Montreal and Hong Kong? (mmm, all minimal—I think evil is more tenacious). Perhaps just the simple expectation, given the law of averages, that it can’t get worse than 2005?

But I have a handful of regular blog readers who might want to offer up their inspirations. What gives you hope?

What a great question, especially at times when hope glimmers so faintly here and around the world.

What gives me hope is the constant reinforcement by the universe or whatever you want to call it, that I don’t have all the answers. Just when I think that I know what is supposed to happen or doubt that something will happen, I get schooled.

This gives me hope because it speaks of limitless possibilities for change that I haven’t even considered. I’ve been doing a lot of work on living in the present moment and one of the admonitions is to “accept, then act”. When I accept “what is” in each moment, I can then take appropriate action. The minute I don’t accept what’s happening in each moment or try to deny or complain about it, nothing can change. Acceptance is a catalyst for true, lasting change.

    Does that make sense? =:0

Thanks for the link, Adrienne. I had heard that there were complaints, but I wasn’t aware of the specifics. Wow.

    Nice to see you. :)

    Carla, write a new post!!

    It’s been too long!

  • CARLAGIRL PHOTO was founded on 14 February 1999 by Carla Willliams, a photographer, writer, and editor, born, raised and heading back to (yea!) Los Angeles, California.

It was established with two goals: to be able to make my own work widely available for free, and to make accessible my research about artists of the African Diaspora, especially photographers, and in particular women. As it developed it grew to also include GLBTQ artists.

Site visitors will probably notice that I haven’t updated here frequently. I am taking a break from my site(s) for at least the summer. I’ve been working in this field for 25 years and I’m burned out on photography and art, the site(s) are in need of major updates/ revamping/ retooling, social media is exhausting, [...] […]

Danielle was briefly a contributor to this site; I am very excited to hear about her latest venture, the collective and now journal Mambu Badu “that seek to find, expose, and nurture emerging female photographers of African descent.”  Congrats, Danielle! As you may (or may not) know, last fall, I co-founded Mambu Badu, a photography collective […]
