I generally don’t do much self-promotion here, ironically, but since I have work in a show that just opened and one about to open I thought I ought to do my duty (and I finally updated this info on my site, too):

“Black Womanhood: Images, Icons, and Ideologies of the African Body,” Hood Museum of Art Dartmouth, New Hampshire 04.01 – 08.10.2008

Hood Explores Views of Black Womanhood Through Time and Across Continents” (Art Daily review)

“Double Exposure: African Americans Before and Behind the Camera,” Museum of the African Diaspora San Francisco, CA 06.19 – 09.28.2008

“Land Rits: Land at the Confluence of Human Cultures,” Northlight Gallery, Arizona State University, Tempe 02.18 – 04.05.2008

“Image and Identity,” Southeast Museum of Photography Daytona Beach, Florida 03.01 – 05.23.2008

    Hi Carla,

I just want to tell you that I think your blog is great!!! With the help of your insight and gift of information I have gained a greater appreciation for photography and a greater awareness of artists within the African Diaspora.

    I do need your help…
I’m looking for a particular photography book that’s out of print and my effors to locate it have failed. Can you give me any information on:

“You Look Beautiful Like That: The Portrait Photographs of Seydou Keita and Malick Sidibe”
    ISBN-0-300-09188-5

I did actually find one copy but it was $300

    Thank you!

Try bookfinder.com–I always use them, and they currently have a copy listed for $140 from a vendor
(not great, but at least not $300!)

  • CARLAGIRL PHOTO was founded on 14 February 1999 by Carla Willliams, a photographer, writer, and editor, born, raised and heading back to (yea!) Los Angeles, California.

It was established with two goals: to be able to make my own work widely available for free, and to make accessible my research about artists of the African Diaspora, especially photographers, and in particular women. As it developed it grew to also include GLBTQ artists.

    • Taking a Break February 8, 2012
Site visitors will probably notice that I haven’t updated here frequently. I am taking a break from my site(s) for at least the summer. I’ve been working in this field for 25 years and I’m burned out on photography and art, the site(s) are in need of major updates/ revamping/ retooling, social media is exhausting, [...] […]

    • Mambu Badu’s Inaugural Magazine February 8, 2012
Danielle was briefly a contributor to this site; I am very excited to hear about her latest venture, the collective and now journal Mambu Badu “that seek to find, expose, and nurture emerging female photographers of African descent.”  Congrats, Danielle! As you may (or may not) know, last fall, I co-founded Mambu Badu, a photography collective […]
