and Ayana Vellissia Jackson,

whose site opens with this great quote:

“Photography and sociology have approximately the same birth date, if you count sociology’s birth as the publication of Comte’s work which gave it its name, and photography’s birth as the date in 1839 when Daguerre made public his method for fixing an image on a metal plate. Like sociologists, photographers have been concerned, in their professional lives, with contemporary social problems: immigration, poverty, racism, social unrest. Both have studied occupations and related institutions of work social classes, communities, cities, societies, and cultures. From its beginnings, photography has been used as a tool for the exploration of society, and photographers have taken that as one of their tasks. Among its several uses, photography has been a tool to explore society, thereby entering upon common ground with sociology.”

- Howard Becker, Northwestern University

I’ve had this site now for nearly 10 years; this blog for 3½. I’ve had my ups and downs with continuing this work–art has probably been my greatest pleasure, but also my worst pain–but this kind of thing is my real joy–discovering a new artist, either because she contacted me directly or a friend sent a link, and sharing that information with whomever is reading. So simple, yet so powerful and meaningful.

I haven’t looked at this site’s stats in a long time (even though I added a site meter when I switched over its format I delete the E-mail they send without reading it), so I don’t even know how many folks are looking at it in the course of a day/week/month. I hope and trust it’s still serving its purpose.

  • CARLAGIRL PHOTO was founded on 14 February 1999 by Carla Willliams, a photographer, writer, and editor, born, raised and heading back to (yea!) Los Angeles, California.

It was established with two goals: to be able to make my own work widely available for free, and to make accessible my research about artists of the African Diaspora, especially photographers, and in particular women. As it developed it grew to also include GLBTQ artists.

    • Taking a Break February 8, 2012
Site visitors will probably notice that I haven’t updated here frequently. I am taking a break from my site(s) for at least the summer. I’ve been working in this field for 25 years and I’m burned out on photography and art, the site(s) are in need of major updates/ revamping/ retooling, social media is exhausting, [...] […]

    • Mambu Badu’s Inaugural Magazine February 8, 2012
Danielle was briefly a contributor to this site; I am very excited to hear about her latest venture, the collective and now journal Mambu Badu “that seek to find, expose, and nurture emerging female photographers of African descent.”  Congrats, Danielle! As you may (or may not) know, last fall, I co-founded Mambu Badu, a photography collective […]
