CALL FOR FILM SUBMISSIONS

from Queer Women of Color Filmmakers for “Queerly Irreverent”
for our 5th Annual Queer Women of Color Film Festival

QWOCMAP, the Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project, invites queer women of color film- makers to submit your satirical, hella funny and thoughtful short films to QWOCMAP’s 5th annual Queer Women of Color Film Festival, to be held at the Brava Theater, San Francisco, June 12-14, 2009.

We know no one can hear us when we talk back to the news, but that doesn’t faze us. We add insightful and irreverent commentary to Rachel Maddow and Keith Olberman. We express our outrage over the crimes against our sister “Jane Doe” in Richmond and Oscar Grant in Oakland. We know about Harvey Milk and we think that everyone should know about Barbara Jordan. And we just know that any one of the fabulous and funny queer women of color we love would be a better host for the Daily Show.

Whether you’re dealing with marriage equality, environmental justice or corporate jerks, immigration, sovereignty or suckas, we want to see your take on the issues that matter most to you and our communities. Make us laugh. Make us cry. Make us laugh until we cry. We can handle it, we’re queer women of color!

  • CARLAGIRL PHOTO was founded on 14 February 1999 by Carla Willliams, a photographer, writer, and editor, born, raised and heading back to (yea!) Los Angeles, California.

It was established with two goals: to be able to make my own work widely available for free, and to make accessible my research about artists of the African Diaspora, especially photographers, and in particular women. As it developed it grew to also include GLBTQ artists.

Site visitors will probably notice that I haven’t updated here frequently. I am taking a break from my site(s) for at least the summer. I’ve been working in this field for 25 years and I’m burned out on photography and art, the site(s) are in need of major updates/ revamping/ retooling, social media is exhausting, [...] […]

Danielle was briefly a contributor to this site; I am very excited to hear about her latest venture, the collective and now journal Mambu Badu “that seek to find, expose, and nurture emerging female photographers of African descent.”  Congrats, Danielle! As you may (or may not) know, last fall, I co-founded Mambu Badu, a photography collective […]
