BROOKIE MAXWELL
Rwanda Mon Amour
A trans-media exhibition:  sculptural installations, drawings, video, and performance

Exhibition Dates: April 3rd – May 9, 2009
Opening reception for the artist:  April 3, 6-8pm

Gallery 138 is pleased to present Rwanda Mon Amour, a trans-media exhibition featuring drawings and sculptural installations by Brookie Maxwell, and video work by Jesse Hawkes, director of the Rwandan theater-based program, RAPSIDA.  This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide. Inspired by the courage of the Rwandan people to heal and progress, Rwanda Mon Amour addresses the roots, repercussions and reparations of genocide.

At this pivotal moment in history, America is redefining its relationship to basic constructs such as money and violence.  In the words of President Obama, “we have chosen perceived safety over our ideals,” embracing collective unconsciousness and greed. As the repercussions of the Rwandan Genocide are manifested in the Congo, Rwanda Mon Amour illuminates the human potential for positive change.

Facing History in Ourselves, an international organization dedicated to teaching tolerance and preventing human rights violations is sponsoring and directing workshops for New York City teachers and their students at Gallery 138 during the exhibition.

Maxwell and Hawkes recently received High Commendation from the Freedom to Create Prize, an award for artists working under human rights contraventions.  A percentage of the profits from Rwanda Mon Amour will go to benefit RAPSIDA’s programs in Rwanda.

Jesse Hawkes received the Theater Against War Award in 2008.  Maxwell was recently interviewed and photographed while working on Rwanda Mon Amour by Michelle Agins of the New York Times.  Work from her Exodus series has recently been acquired by the Amistad Research Center and will be shown in 2010 at the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Gallery 138 is located at 138 West 17th Street, 5th floor, New York, NY, 10011.  For additional information and gallery hours, please contact Brookie Maxwell at (212) 633- 0324, or contact@gallery138.com.

  • CARLAGIRL PHOTO was founded on 14 February 1999 by Carla Willliams, a photographer, writer, and editor, born, raised and heading back to (yea!) Los Angeles, California.

It was established with two goals: to be able to make my own work widely available for free, and to make accessible my research about artists of the African Diaspora, especially photographers, and in particular women. As it developed it grew to also include GLBTQ artists.

Site visitors will probably notice that I haven’t updated here frequently. I am taking a break from my site(s) for at least the summer. I’ve been working in this field for 25 years and I’m burned out on photography and art, the site(s) are in need of major updates/ revamping/ retooling, social media is exhausting, [...] […]

Danielle was briefly a contributor to this site; I am very excited to hear about her latest venture, the collective and now journal Mambu Badu “that seek to find, expose, and nurture emerging female photographers of African descent.”  Congrats, Danielle! As you may (or may not) know, last fall, I co-founded Mambu Badu, a photography collective […]
