En Foco Portfolio Reviews

Posted on | June 11, 2009 | 3 Comments

I’ve been a portfolio reviewer a few times now, and I have to say that, as exhausting as it is, I find it very worthwhile—I’m currently working with someone on an exhibition whose work I first saw during a review. If you have the time and money, that’s a pretty great group of reviewers below.

Treat yourself to one-on-one Portfolio Reviews with curators, editors and arts professionals on the same day, in a supportive and affordable environment!

Reviewers include:

* Rocio Aranda-Alvarado, Jersey City Museum

* Florian Bachleda, Latina Magazine

* Don Burmeister, Safe-T-Gallery

* Song Chong, Magnum Photos

* Elizabeth Ferrer, Rotunda Gallery (am session only)

* Hannah Frieser, Light Work

* Elvis Fuentes, El Museo del Barrio

* Rosie Gordon-Wallace, Diaspora Vibe Gallery

* Charles Guice, Charles Guice Contemporary

* Stephanie Heimann, Fovea Exhibitions

* Lisa Henry, Independent Curator, Writer (pm session only)

* Julia Herzberg, Art Historian and Curator

* Jessica Ingram, Adjunct Professor at Tisch, NYU

* Michael Itkoff, Daylight Magazine

* Stella Kramer, Photography Consultant

* Lesley Martin, Aperture

* Erin Riley-Lopez, Bronx Museum of the Arts

* Rita Rivera, Corbis

* Ariel Shanberg, Center for Photography at Woodstock

* Jill Waterman, PDNedu and ASMP Bulletin (pm session only)

Each review session lasts for 20 minutes; photographers are guaranteed a minimum of three reviews and receive a ‘gift bag.’ Upon registration, participants also receive an article by photo marketing expert Mary Virginia Swanson, on how to best prepare themselves for the Review. In between sessions, relax and share your work with peers in the Photographer’s Creative Lounge.

Location: Calumet Photographic, New York, NY
Date:Saturday, June 20 from 10am-5:00pm (check-in starts at 9:30)

    Hi Carla,

    Just want to say your blog is amazing. En Foco’s portfolio review sessions are very helpful and most surprising is their price point. With Fotofest and Review Santa Fe being over hundreds of dollars, this is a great alternative and a nice start for new artists.

    Hey, Carla Girl! Thanks for supporting Black Freighter’s efforts. If there is anything we can do for you, please let me know. I mean this.

    Carla,
    thank you for posting, and Jane, thank you for your comment too! We feel its so important to offer affordable and free alternatives for photographers – so much of what is out there is beyond many people’s abilities (do i pay rent or buy film, or go to X review?). The reviewers are really amazing and so knowledgeable, they share their time, so their intent comes from the heart as well.
    Gracias,
    Miriam
    PS – we have a killer goodie bag too!

  • CARLAGIRL PHOTO was founded on 14 February 1999 by Carla Willliams, a photographer, writer, and editor, born, raised and heading back to (yea!) Los Angeles, California.

    It was established with two goals: to be able to make my own work widely available for free, and to make accessible my research about artists of the African Diaspora, especially photographers, and in particular women. As it developed it grew to also include GLBTQ artists.

      Site visitors will probably notice that I haven’t updated here frequently. I am taking a break from my site(s) for at least the summer. I’ve been working in this field for 25 years and I’m burned out on photography and art, the site(s) are in need of major updates/ revamping/ retooling, social media is exhausting, [...] […]

      Danielle was briefly a contributor to this site; I am very excited to hear about her latest venture, the collective and now journal Mambu Badu “that seek to find, expose, and nurture emerging female photographers of African descent.”  Congrats, Danielle! As you may (or may not) know, last fall, I co-founded Mambu Badu, a photography collective […]
