We all have to make our hustle, right, but $50 logo t-shirts? Ordinarily I’m all over artists’ retail products, but in this economy???

Maroonrebel is proud to present world-renowned artist Renée Cox’s first retail collection of wearable history designed to encourage dialogue. In a limited edition of 1,000 of each design, Cox continues the radical art that first catapulted her into the headlines in 2001. She is known for her controversial Yo Mamas Last Supper that made headlines internationally by shocking then Mayor, Rudy Giuliani and the Catholic Church. Her unique and sensational vision depicted Black disciples sharing the meal, with a naked Cox as the Christ figure. Cox ’s new line confronts issues of race and gender in a distinctive original style.
When visiting Maroonrebel.com, don’t forget to click on the link underneath the slogan to get the whole history from Wikipedia.
These shirts are sexy, sassy, smart, educational and enlightening!

I love the concept. It’s so important in our society today to educate people about AA history. I bought Coloreds Only, and it was worth my $50. It’s such a conversation piece. There was a woman at the grocery store who read it as ‘color- red’ and I had the opportunity to explain what Colored Only meant.

I know the price point is high, but it’s Renee Cox. However, if Maroonrebel lowered the price to $35, I would definitely buy one as a gift.

  • CARLAGIRL PHOTO was founded on 14 February 1999 by Carla Willliams, a photographer, writer, and editor, born, raised and heading back to (yea!) Los Angeles, California.

It was established with two goals: to be able to make my own work widely available for free, and to make accessible my research about artists of the African Diaspora, especially photographers, and in particular women. As it developed it grew to also include GLBTQ artists.

I’ve been working in this field for 25 years and I’m burned out on photography and art, the site(s) are in need of major updates/ revamping/ retooling, social media is exhausting, [...] […]

Danielle was briefly a contributor to this site; I am very excited to hear about her latest venture, the collective and now journal Mambu Badu “that seek to find, expose, and nurture emerging female photographers of African descent.”  Congrats, Danielle! As you may (or may not) know, last fall, I co-founded Mambu Badu, a photography collective […]
