(I received an email from the auction house regarding the recent discovery in Ohio of this William H. Johnson painting. I love this kind of unexpected thing, a painting that turns up out of nowhere—collectors [and budding Peggy Cooper Cafritzes], get your checkbooks!).
Announcing a rare opportunity to own an original William H. Johnson painting
Auction to be held Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 3pm (Eastern Daylight Savings Time) Grandview Mercantile Co. 873 N. High St., Columbus, Ohio 43215 614-421-7000 Auctioneer-Scott Heise Licensed and bonded in and by the State of Ohio William H. Johnson (1901-1971) was one of the most important artists working in the second quarter of the twentieth century. This untitled piece was painted circa 1942 at the height of Mr. Johnson’s artistic powers. It is signed by the artist and has an inscription on the back that identifies it as one of the 1000-plus Johnson paintings that were cataloged by the Harmon Foundation in the late 1950’s. Executed in gouache & tempera, pen & ink on brown craft paper, this is an extremely fine and unique example of his work. The piece has been appraised and authenticated by Richard J. Powell PH.D, the John Spencer Bassett Professor of Art and Art History at Duke University. For additional details or to schedule a private showing, please contact Sharon O’Brien at 614-421-7000.
