News from Karen Miranda Augustine

My regular update starts off with sad news as many may now know of the passing of Ayanna Black this week Tuesday. A co-founder of Tiger Lily journal – the first literary pubication for women of colour in Canada – as well as CAN:BAIA (Canadian Artists’ Network: Black Artists in Action) from the early ’90s, as well as a writer and poet who published anthologies of African-Canadian writers, Ayanna was very committed to creating spaces for artists who are often pushed to the side of the Canadian mainstream, as well as the counterculture (which has also been guilty of ignoring our work). I will always remember her as someone who was always generous with her time and unbelievably supportive of me and, in particular, of local Black artists in general. For those receiving my updates who are unfamiliar with her, please visit: http://www.poets.ca/Linktext/direct/black.htm

GHETTO BIENNALE 2009, PORT-AU-PRINCE
The deadline has passed, but just knowing that Haiti is having its first ever biennale is both intriguing and exciting. Check out the links in the post for additional information.

The Grand Rue Sculptors are a community of artists living in a downtown slum neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. This is the newest art community to have emerged in the last ten years. Their work has opened entirely new vistas into the creative possibilities of the Vodou-inspired arts of Haiti. Their muscular sculptural collages of engine manifolds, computer entrails, TV sets, medical debris, skulls and discarded lumber transforms the detritus of a failing economy into deranged, post-apocalyptic totems.

KILLING CREATIVITY
It’s ironic in so many ways now, Robinson’s speech. Computer and tech-illiterate profs (believe me, there are way more than you can imagine), will soon have no choice but to catch up, learn and value non-textual language within the inescapable realities of image-focused communication in the 21st century. But his speech also made me think of the problems with art education in general: No one teaches you how to live the life of an artist, practically speaking. Art schools don’t bother to teach students business (and I’m not talking CVs and gallery proposals). Business schools, on the other hand, only teach “the bottom line.”

HOW DO YOU MAKE A FILM WITH NO MONEY?
Good question. How do you make a film suitable for screening in a cinema with no money? Well, the first thing you need to do is buy a Macintosh. No, really. When I first wrote the screenplay for Removals we approached the Scottish film funding body, Scottish Screen, for help. This was not forthcoming. We tried again. Same story. So without the actual industry assistance we were stuffed, right? Wrong!

  • CARLAGIRL PHOTO was founded on 14 February 1999 by Carla Willliams, a photographer, writer, and editor, born, raised and heading back to (yea!) Los Angeles, California.

It was established with two goals: to be able to make my own work widely available for free, and to make accessible my research about artists of the African Diaspora, especially photographers, and in particular women. As it developed it grew to also include GLBTQ artists.

Site visitors will probably notice that I haven’t updated here frequently. I am taking a break from my site(s) for at least the summer. I’ve been working in this field for 25 years and I’m burned out on photography and art, the site(s) are in need of major updates/ revamping/ retooling, social media is exhausting, [...] […]

Danielle was briefly a contributor to this site; I am very excited to hear about her latest venture, the collective and now journal Mambu Badu “that seek to find, expose, and nurture emerging female photographers of African descent.”  Congrats, Danielle! As you may (or may not) know, last fall, I co-founded Mambu Badu, a photography collective […]
