Viva Habbit Van Assen  says she follows the example of James Van Der Zee, a photographer from The Harlem Renaissance, by “capturing the beauty of black folk in which he took ordinary people and expounded on their blackness.”  Viva’s portrait work is a display of self-expression while photographing outdoors allows her to portray beauty in its rare form.  In her work, she tries her utmost to show something that others may have missed.
