UPDATED: Zoe Strauss’s Gulf Coast photos and update

UPDATE:

I’m going to be working on this project for the rest of July…

http://onthebeach-zs.blogspot.com/

I’m heading to New Orleans Tuesday for a month’s stay; like everyone, I’ve been very aware of the further assault upon the Gulf Coast by the BP oil spill. I got this email yesterday from the fabulous Zoe Strauss, and I wanted to share it with this site’s visitors:

4775745467_503eb820f2_bDear Friends,

I’m coming back from the Gulf with some terrible news. Yesterday and today I was in Waveland, Mississippi and the oiling wasn’t just on the beach, it’s already moved inland into the wetlands. The oil on the beach and in the water is beyond what I could have imagined. I think this disaster is going to destroy the Southern US Gulf region, it’s going to kill the wetlands. God knows I hope I’m completely wrong about that, but from what I saw I can’t see how they can be saved.

4776383554_d8d3028cca_b-1I’ve got a lot to sort out and I just started to save the photos. I hope to have some more posted by Monday with a much longer update.

4776382912_93c69dc1f4_bI’ve got to sort out the “art” from the “journalist” possibilities, I’m pretty sure 3 or 4 these photos are important to show as a straight forward recording of what’s happening there. But to be honest, the scope of what’s happened is impossible to articulate, in words or photos.

  • CARLAGIRL PHOTO was founded on 14 February 1999 by Carla Willliams, a photographer, writer, and editor, born, raised and heading back to (yea!) Los Angeles, California.

It was established with two goals: to be able to make my own work widely available for free, and to make accessible my research about artists of the African Diaspora, especially photographers, and in particular women. As it developed it grew to also include GLBTQ artists.

Site visitors will probably notice that I haven’t updated here frequently. I am taking a break from my site(s) for at least the summer. I’ve been working in this field for 25 years and I’m burned out on photography and art, the site(s) are in need of major updates/ revamping/ retooling, social media is exhausting, [...] […]

    • Mambu Badu’s Inaugural Magazine February 8, 2012
Danielle was briefly a contributor to this site; I am very excited to hear about her latest venture, the collective and now journal Mambu Badu “that seek to find, expose, and nurture emerging female photographers of African descent.”  Congrats, Danielle! As you may (or may not) know, last fall, I co-founded Mambu Badu, a photography collective […]
