Call for Submissions

Sauti Yetu Center for African Women is calling for artist submissions for an upcoming art exhibit.  This traveling exhibit will be housed at various institutions of higher education and will commence in October 2010 to commemorate Sauti Yetu’s 6th Anniversary.  The major goal of this exhibit is to reframe the image and popular perception of African Women in the United States.  We aim to do this by exploring the following questions:

  • What is the migration experience for women from a gender perspective?
  • What is popular perspective and image of African women in the U.S.A.?

Sauti Yetu seeks submissions from African artists who explore and address topics surrounding the migration of African Women. Topics can include but are not limited to:

.         Recent Immigration – 1965 Immigration Reform Act that allowed Africans to resettle in the United States

.         Gender

.         Family

.         Gender-Based Violence

.         Culture, Identity or Change

About the Organization

Sauti Yetu Center for African Women, Inc is a community-based organization committed to mobilizing poor and low income African immigrant women and families to improve the qualities of their lives, strengthen their families and develop their communities. We achieve our mission through direct social services, advocacy and community organization and public education.

Sauti Yetu has three core programs: a) Family Violence Prevention; Girls Empowerment and Leadership Initiative and; Prevention of Female Genital Cutting (FGC) and support of circumcised women and girls.

Exhibition dates: FALL 2010 – To coincide with 6th Annual Celebration

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Eligibility: We are seeking submissions from African artists.  Both men and women artists are encouraged to apply. All forms of media are accepted.

Image Submission:
. digital files in jpeg format at 72 dpi and 800 pixels
. last name, first name, title of piece
. 3 – 5 images per submission

Text Submission to accompany images:
. Bio: 100-words or less
. Artist statement: 250-words or less, that addresses the question:  How is your artwork reflective of African immigrant women’s experiences?
. CV: One-page

  • CARLAGIRL PHOTO was founded on 14 February 1999 by Carla Willliams, a photographer, writer, and editor, born, raised and heading back to (yea!) Los Angeles, California.

    It was established with two goals: to be able to make my own work widely available for free, and to make accessible my research about artists of the African Diaspora, especially photographers, and in particular women. As it developed it grew to also include GLBTQ artists.
