The Donkey Den is a bar and restaurant located in downtown Denver that bills itself as "Tijuana, Colorado." A Tijuana "donkey den" refers to a brothel where men pay to see women have sex with animals. Such places also participate in the sexual slavery of girls. Naming a restaurant "The Donkey Den" is a blatant mockery of sex crimes against women and girls. The Donkey Den's menu includes "Ho-Made Fries" and "Donkey Punch" burgers. The Encyclopedia of Sex defines a Donkey Punch as follows: Donkey Punch (verb) : During doggystyle sexual activity, a man punches his female partner as hard as he can in the back of the skull right before he reaches climax. This causes her to convulse and tighten every cavity. A "Donkey Punch" is not a sex act, it is violence.

We ask that you join us in boycotting the Donkey Den to show the owner that our community does not support this type of marketing. Our next action is scheduled for Saturday June 11 at 10pm. We'll be meeting at 1109 Lincoln Street in Denver to protest and hand out flyers with information on sexual assualt and the boycott. I hope to see you there.

I'm literally sick to my stomach. It's hard to keep believing that men by nature aren't violent and misogynistic, that humans in general haven't evolved as a species when here is yet another example of horror.
How do we stay positive in the midst of such insanity? I'm at a loss.

You know, Kelly and Bianca, I think this was the worst for me, too, just jaw-droppingly incomprehensible, along with the incredibly ignorant quote from the restaurant's owner from the Denver Post:
"I am sorry that people are hurt by it, but any name can carry more than one meaning. Names are just names."
I'd like to give the restaurant owner the benefit of the doubt that he's just an idiot, but when items on the menu are named after violent sexual and non-sexual acts, I just can't. He knows exactly what he's doing and he doesn't give a shit.
Karma isn't always pleasant and I hope in his case, it's excruciating.

Donkey Den Responds to Community
We are pleased to announce that the Donkey Den is taking significant steps to address recent concerns raised by members of the community.
Because of this, as of June 10 we are suspending our boycott, and canceling the protest planned for Saturday June 11.
The Donkey Den is in the process of changing the names of some of their menu items, and has agreed to meet with leaders of anti-violence and women's advocacy groups to exchange ideas about how the club can play a positive role in the community. They have also expressed interest in participating in events that help support organizations offering services to victims of violence and sexual assault.
We applaud the steps the Donkey Den is taking, and support their efforts to reach a positive outcome to the recent controversy.

Thanks for the update on the protest, Adrienne. At least I can go to sleep tonight feeling a little better about this situation. Hopefully, the restaurant owner will really listen to what the groups have to say. Maybe if he thinks about his mother, wife, girlfriend, sister, etc., in the context of what he is saying with his restaurant, he'll have an epiphany.
(I'm not holding my breath that he'll be that self-reflective, but you never know.)
