Mexicans are the new blacks!
Need I mention that this is the woman who claimed "Mexicans" had kidnapped her—that's right, vilifiy a racial group when you want to drum up false sympathy in America. Susan Smith, anyone?
Turns out it can also make you a well-paid celebrity (as long as no white people, especially children, are harmed by you in the process. In that instance, all lucrative deals are off.)!

Runaway deal?: Fresh from copping a plea to faking her own abduction, "Runaway Bride" Jennifer Wilbanks seems ready to cash in. I hear that Queen of All Media Judith Regan is close to inking a mid-six-figure deal with the 32-year-old Wilbanks and her on-again, off-again future husband, John Mason, that includes movie-of-the-week rights (possibly for NBC) and a network television interview - maybe with Katie Couric.
Hmmm...what's her title going to be? I Was a Whacked Out, Race-Bating Imbecile Afraid of My Big Wedding?!

In our reality TV, 15 minutes of fame celebrity culture, this isn't a surprising development. The Wilbanks story is offensive on so many levels, especially her race-baiting. The idea that she will make money off of her racism without paying back the money her hometown spent on her "abduction" is sickening.
Also, did she ever apologize for her claim about her Mexican abductor? I don't remember hearing one. She is the latest Susan Smith and Charles Stuart. (He was the guy in Boston who killed his wife but blamed a black man.)
Between this story, Dairy Queen and the German Zoo, it sure seems like the world really hasn't changed. That's a depressing thought on a rainy day in the Bay Area.
I'm enjoying the blog, Carla, and continued good wishes on your time in New Mexico.
you said it, carla and kelly!
in a country where the vigilante/terrorist minutemen racists can "police" the border w/mexico and win praise from the governator and congressional reps in colorado (fuck you, tom tancredo) and arizona, it's almost predictable that this woman becomes a media darling. fuck her. and fuck the minutemen.
the minutemen wingnuts (and their "save our state" cronies) are trying to destroy a piece of public art in baldwin park (LA) because the truth is apparently too painful. their problem with the piece called danza indigenas? in the sculpture, artist judy baca uses a quote from gloria anzaldua that raises the question of who the problem really is:
"it was better before they came"
and
"this land was mexican once, was indian always, and is, and will be again"
guess the truth hurts, motherfuckers.
baca's statement is here:

and definitely check out the excellent response by gina ruiz at:

you'll wanna note that one of the racist jackasses called gloria anzaldua "a dead lesbian." fuck them.
one "minuteman" plowed his cars into protesters in garden grove and was not charged with any crime!
lots of info at:

here's the specific link to the info on the minutemen going into baldwin park:

you probably know about the artist Mark Vallen. he's gotta response up at his blog too:

i enjoy your blog too, carla. i'll miss reading it for a few weeks.
Thanks for the links, Adrienne. I had no idea what was happening in Baldwin Park. (Must be those job-hunting blinders which have been on my eyes.)
I've heard so many people talk about the comparisons to Germany just before Hitler took power and the U.S. now and it's frightening. While the economic aspects are distressing enough, it's the scapegoating mentality that I find most troubling. The Nazis blamed Jews for the bad state of life in Germany and the American Right blames immigrants (documented or undocumented), gays and lesbians, Muslims, you name it.
I have to fight the urge to stoop to the mean-spitited, hateful attitudes of those on the Right. I seethe with anger and it paralyzes me instead of spurring me into action. At least there's comfort in knowing that my anger and my distress aren't mine alone.
no, we are all definitely in this together! i try to visualize the govt. etc. as desperate and on its last legs, like a nasty imperialist and white supremacist machine that is pushing itself beyond its capacity. we are not the desperate ones in my imagination. the forces of oppression are teetering on the edge of extinction, and it's just gonna be a matter of us all rising up to knock it down once and for all. at least that is my fantasy....
Hey Kelly and Adrienne,
Kelly, thanks for remembering Charles Stuart and giving him his dubious due alongside Smith and Wilbanks and Adrienne, thanks for the links about the attempt at censorship of Baca's work (I wish I could figure out how to insert hyperlinks in comments). I, too, feel paralyzed (especially like you, Kelly, in the midst of looking for work), and I find myself stooping to their level when I hear something about like what happened to my nephew, but I am also definitely reminded daily from people who e-mail me that we are far from alone. Besieged and beleaguered, maybe, but not alone.
You know, referring to Anzaldúa as a "dead Chicana lesbian" I think is exactly how these zealots want us—dead and gone, and the more offenses you can knock off with one death (especially one you don't have to perpetrate yourselves) the better. She was a two-fer! I'm with Adrienne; I believe that they're the desperate ones, too. They will implode. I cling to that hope.
