It lost. It wasn't the great gay cinematic coming, so to speak.
What is wrong with gay people (and those who write about them; I know nothing about Annie Proulx except that liberals seem to like her)? Is it that serious? I've never seen the Oscars award the best movie of any year!

How tacky was that? Wow. Get over yourself. As someone involved in the entertainment industry said to once, "Hollywood is not a meritocracy".
I happen to have liked "Crash". I liked "Brokeback Mountain" as well. They are two very different films and are impossible to judge against each other. All of these award shows are subjective. It's not like the Academy members were voting on five different interpretations of "Hamlet" or "A Streetcar Named Desire".
You can't tell me that the success of "Brokeback Mountain" hasn't helped Annie Proulx. Stop the whining and go write something, preferably not a sour grapes op ed.
