and speaking of black women...

...am I the only black woman blogger not moved to near-tears over Oprah's Legend's Ball? With some notable exceptions (like Suzan-Lori Parks) I saw a lot of mediocrity and hype, though I love my black sisters. This is a complaint I have with my people, my people--is all success to be lauded? Is "making it" in the mainstream the ultimate measure of worth? I mean, the mainstream standard ain't much of a standard.

Still, sigh, I should like anyone who celebrates black women in a big and beautiful way. But diamond earrings and individual waiters?

I was also moved to tears to see the struggles and adversity that was showcased with the Legends Ball. It was empowering and very neccessary in my opinion. But i do agree that success is looked upon as "making it." It's amazing that those women were honored, but it's even amazing to think of how many unsung heroes that went unrecognized. It just means there's something else much bigger than fame in store for them. :)

I thank you so very much for saying this. I could not figure out why I really wasn't interested. If you had not posted the picture of SLP, whom I LOVE, I would not have seen it. (Mainly because most of my coworkers haven't a clue who she is). Yes, I want to see Angela Davis, Alice Walker, Tracy Chapman.

And I digress, but Missy Elliott? Why?

I totally love her, too. I went to hear her read when her novel Getting Mother's Body came out and I fell in love with her! She reminded me so much of Ani DiFranco, for some reason--perhaps it was that as part of her reading she brought her guitar and played the blues songs she and her husband had written for the book. We're really excited to go see her play The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World, which is playing here. But I digress.

Yeah. I don't have a TV; I checked it out online. I already dislike Oprah for various reasons, but this just seemed long on glitz and low on criticality (for me it's Kimberly Elise and Angela Bassett), though you don't get more mainstream than her. Still, Suzan-Lori got through...
