you wouldn't dismiss Hank Willis Thomas, like this. so investigate further.
I think in a moment when artists have the freedom to independently distribute their work (music, visual, etc.) rather than bow to pressure to alter it (hence his now-Untitled album) his sincerity is suspect. If you want to make a statement, stand your ground rather than continually watering it down and delaying it until it seems like a stunt. Thomas' work addresses that very vacuity that Nas' image embodies. Besides, no matter how often he invokes Malcolm I just don't think he's that deep. Sue me.
