help some ladies out
I received this message from Sara Blokland, and I know that there are also readers here who can contribute greatly to their project. Do check out their blog.Dear Friends, Colleagues,
My classmate, Asmara Pelupessy and I, both students MA photographic studies at the university of Leiden have been working on a collaborative project for the past couple of months which will be completed this coming week. Our project is focused on how photography is used in ethnographic museums, especially the Tropenmuseum (or Tropical Museum) in Amsterdam, which began in order "exhibit ‘raw materials, natural products and crafts from the Dutch overseas territories" and now "tells stories about non-western cultures" (from their website - http://www.tropenmuseum.nl/smartsite.shtml?ch=FAB&id=5853).
We are interested both generally as Masters students in Photographic Studies, but also personally, as both of us have a parent from the former Dutch colonies. We have been using a blog to (in a very free form style) post ideas, images, research, reactions and communicate about the project: http://mapsworkshop.blogspot.com/
To extend the collaboration even farther, it would be wonderful if you could make a visit to our blog and post a comment (or more!). Any reaction, confusion, your opinion, addition on this subject and comments would be wonderful to hear. We are curious about your vision of these presentation in the museums, there history and the text we put on the blog. This will be really useful in helping us produce our final presentation this week, during the workshop given by Susan Meiselas, which will utilize some image and text from the blog.
You can also send me a direct reaction by email. Hope you find the time & I really look forward to seeing your fresh perspectives on the blog.
met groet Asmara and Sara Blokland
ps Sinds sept 2007 ben ik naast mijn werk als kunstenaar enz, deeltijd student MA Photographic studies, vandaar deze mail met groet Sara
