more evidence that san francisco is not the bastion of progressiveness we all like to think it is

From feministing.com:

This weekend was the Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco, where folks do a footrace while dressing up and doing some outdoor partying.
Apparently some guys thought this was a great opportunity to dress up like Duke lacrosse players and chant “No means yes!” I wish I was joking. I can’t even fathom [...]

i’ve got your reality right here

Thanks to the beautiful and fierce Ms. Adrienne Carey Hurley for making me aware of this atrocity in my backyard (there was an article last year in the SF Weekly in which the bar’s owner claims to have thrown the teeth in the trash rather than deal with the controversy). I’m ashamed to say I’ve [...]

unreal – once again, do something

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) – Police apparently came prepared for gang warfare when they sent three squad cars and a helicopter in response to a 911 call. Instead, they found an 11-year-old girl who had thrown a rock to defend herself as neighborhood boys pelted her with water balloons.
What happened next stunned Maribel Cuevas and her [...]

and it won’t stop…

Is this the season or something? I just received this from a friend in Denver:
Please read below about the new restaurant “donkey den” and their policies and their menu item names, etc. There will be an “action” tomorrow nite (Sat, June 11) at 10pm to make known to the owner of this establishment, that violence [...]

  • CARLAGIRL PHOTO was founded on 14 February 1999 by Carla Willliams, a photographer, writer, and editor, born, raised and heading back to (yea!) Los Angeles, California.

It was established with two goals: to be able to make my own work widely available for free, and to make accessible my research about artists of the African Diaspora, especially photographers, and in particular women. As it developed it grew to also include GLBTQ artists.

I’ve been working in this field for 25 years and I’m burned out on photography and art, the site(s) are in need of major updates/ revamping/ retooling, social media is exhausting, [...] […]

    • Mambu Badu’s Inaugural Magazine February 4, 2012
Danielle was briefly a contributor to this site; I am very excited to hear about her latest venture, the collective and now journal Mambu Badu “that seek to find, expose, and nurture emerging female photographers of African descent.”  Congrats, Danielle! As you may (or may not) know, last fall, I co-founded Mambu Badu, a photography collective […]
